In Health Care Debate, Small Businesses Are Key
"As they work to overhaul the nation"s healthcare system, President Obama and his congressional allies have pledged to help small-business owners such as Rhonda Ealy and Kelli Glasser," The Los Angeles Times reports. "Both businesswomen desperately want help. But they have strongly divergent views about what Washington should do, reflecting a broader debate about how to relieve the burden on the nation"s roughly 6 million small businesses." Ealy owns a coffee roasting company in Bend, Ore. with 13 employees, she says she "loves a Democratic proposal to create a government-run insurance plan, which she hopes will allow her to get her employees better coverage for less." Glasser, who "makes museum and trade-show exhibits" and has 87 employees, "hates a separate provision in the legislation that would place a new requirement on many businesses to cover their employees."

University Lecturer Receives National Recognition, UK

A Senior Lecturer from Canterbury Christ Church University has been awarded Fellowship of the Institute of Healthcare Management (IHM) at a ceremony on Thursday 14th May. Richard Hayward, a Senior Lecturer in Nursing and Applied Clinical Studies at the University, has been recognised for his contribution to healthcare management in a ceremony that took place at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Savoy Place, London. Richard was one of the two academics amongst those presented with the award by Stuart Bains, President of the Institute of Healthcare Management and Chief Executive of East Kent Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Richard said: "This is a singular honour that provides national recognition of expertise in healthcare management. It was particularly challenging, since the criteria for the award was based around service delivery and not education." In order to receive the award, Richard, who has been at the University for over 11 years, was required to submit a 3,000 word document, followed by an hour long interview, highlighting how he matched the criteria set out by the IHM. Along with this acknowledgement from his peers, Richard has also been rewarded with a place on the panel of assessors for the Institute of Healthcare Management and will also join a panel of assessors for their management programmes. Institute of Healthcare Management (IHM) IHM is the professional organisation for managers throughout healthcare, including the NHS, Independent Providers, Healthcare Consultants and the Armed Forces. The IHM"s focus in improving patient/user care wherever and whenever they need healthcare. The route to achieving this is through the promotion of excellence in healthcare management and is achieved by: - Publishing standards of management practice - Promoting the IHM Code (covering behavioural conduct and ethical aspects of management practice) - Establishing a Continuous Development Framework - Promoting CPD and moving towards implementing a CPD validation mechanism - Holding CPD events in the United Kingdom - Establishing a coaches database to support members when they choose an executive coach The IHM is influential - it has access to the highest offices of the NHS, many of the senior team in the NHS are members and by promoting CPD they influence the management practice of a great number of managers.
