ANA Reaffirms Support Of Health Reform Legislation

The American Nurses Association (ANA) reached out to lawmakers Friday, with a letter in support of H.R. 3200 "America"s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009." After a contingent from ANA took part in a Rose Garden press conference with President Obama July 15th, ANA set out to engage lawmakers, nurses, and other health professionals across the country to voice their commitment to real healthcare reform. "This legislation clearly represents a movement toward much-needed, comprehensive and meaningful reform for our nation"s healthcare system," remarked ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR, "America"s nurses understand that this reform cannot wait; it must be done today." H.R. 3200 includes provisions vital to achieve much-needed, comprehensive and meaningful reform for our nation"s healthcare system, such as a public health insurance plan option which would assure that patient choice is a reality and not an empty promise, expansion of Nursing Workforce Development Programs to provide grants and loan repayment programs for nursing education, and the recognition of Nurse Practitioners as primary care providers in a "medical home" care model. ANA urges all nurses and health care professionals to be a part of the healthcare reform effort. Find out the latest on ANA"s action on health reform and other legislation of importance to nurses by visiting here. The ANA is the only full-service professional organization representing the interests of the nation"s 2.9 million registered nurses through its 51 constituent member nurses associations, its 24 organizational affiliates, and its workforce advocacy affiliate, the Center for American Nurses. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
